Our survey highlights a key finding: 29% of respondents strongly believe that providing information on how to store food properly can significantly help prevent waste. This statistic sheds light on an often-overlooked aspect of food waste – the lack of consumer knowledge about optimal food storage practices. Proper storage can dramatically extend the life of food, from fresh produce to pantry staples, and reduce the amount of food that ends up in the trash.
The potential impact of educating consumers about effective storage methods is immense. Simple tips, such as the proper temperature for refrigerating certain foods or how to store bread to prevent mold, can make a significant difference in the longevity of food. This education needs to be simple, accessible and widely disseminated, possibly through in-store signage, digital platforms and packaging labels. There is a role for innovation in packaging design to support this educational effort.
Educating the public about proper food storage is a critical step toward a more sustainable food system. It empowers consumers, helps reduce waste, and ultimately contributes to environmental and food security goals.
