A significant portion of our respondents, 25%, strongly believe that extending the shelf life of food products can be a key strategy in combating food waste. This insight opens up an important discussion about the balance between food preservation and maintaining nutritional and sensory quality. The challenge is to develop methods to extend shelf life without resorting to excessive use of preservatives or compromising food safety.
Innovations in food technology, packaging and preservation methods offer promising ways to meet this challenge. Beyond technological solutions, there is also a critical need for consumer education. Many consumers do not fully understand how to properly store different types of food or what the dates printed on packaging really mean. Educational campaigns focusing on these issues can empower consumers to make better food storage and consumption decisions, further reducing waste.
